a burly Merlin
a burly Merlin is my version of an American Myth, an epic story about an immortal miner's quest to live a life of his own design. It's the story of a man, born under a total eclipse in a small western town who falls in love with a woman named Alice who is always on time, who is herelf the embodiment of time. Essentially the a burly Merlin work is about a man falling in love with time.
"It all boils down to the desire to live forever. That's what art is all about." - Damien Hirst
"...the mummification of reality" - Andre Bazin
These two quotes have stuck with me over the years. The Damien Hirst quote sits as sort of a lynch pin for the whole work, and the Andre Bazin has more bearing on my current work. Both deal with the concept of time.
I believe that there are 8 different segments of time. The types in this theory are personalized and subjective, and there are probably more if you were to look at humanity or civilization or the universe as a whole, but they are:
A Moment ( the shortest, almost non existent piece of time)
Time Moving Slowly
Time Flying By
Time that is Running Out
A Lifetime ( All the time that you have)
The End (Death)
Immortality (More Time than you Should have)
For the last 7 years I've been working on one large project. Creating a world and characters to inhabit it. The project is called "a burly Merlin" named after my beard. Merlin is at the top of a hierarchy of characters, his story is overarching, all other characters' stories take place in his timeline and have some importance and tie-in with his story.
